Manson ‘Girl’ Held in Contempt, Jailed

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 5 — One of Charles Manson’s “girls” was held in contempt of court today and ordered to jail for five days for her conduct at the penalty phase of the cult leader’s trial for the slayings of Gary Hinman and Donald (Shorty) Shea.

Lynne (Squeaky) Fromme, 27, was cited for contempt by Superior Judge Raymond Choate when she refused to take the witness stand and answer questions without causing a disruption. She had been called as a defense witness.

Manson was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder in the 1969 deaths of Hinman and Shea. Dep. Dist. Atty. Anthony C. Manzella Jr. is seeking the death penalty.

Meanwhile, in another court, Superior Judge James G. Kolts submitted the penalty issue to the jury in the trial of Manson follower Steve Grogan. Grogan also was convicted of murder in the death of Shea.
