Patricia Krenwinkel Fights Extradition

MOBILE, Ala., Dec. 30 – A 22-year-old Mobile woman has filed a legal petition in circuit court here in the hopes of preventing her removal to Los Angeles where she is under indictment for the Sharon Tate mass slayings.

The petition was filed Monday by attorneys for Patricia Krenwinkel, who was arrested Dec 1 on warrants issued by California, on a writ of habeas corpus.

Judge Joseph M. Hocklander Jr. set a hearing on the motion for next Monday.

M. A. Marsal, Miss Krenwinkel’s attorney, contended in court Monday that the warrant under which the woman was arrested and held without bond failed to conform with state and federal laws.

He argued further that Miss Krenwinkel was being held illegally and should be released.

Marsal filed the action 1 1/2 hours before a noon deadline set by the court for Dec. 19 for Miss Krenwinkel to indicate whether she would oppose extradition.

Gov. Albert Brewer has approved a formal request from California officials for her extradition.

Miss Krenwinkel, who has lived in both Mobile and Los Angeles, is one of three young women and two men indicted in the slayings of actress Sharon Tate and six other persons in August.
