Beausoleil Attorney Calls Testimony Lies

LOS ANGELES, Apr. 16 – The defense attorney for Robert K. Beausoleil, reputed member of the “Manson Family” on trial for the slaying of a bagpipe musician, told a jury Wednesday it heard “a pack of lies” in an attempt to “shoot Bobby down.”

Leon Salter, a deputy public defender, said in his closing remarks that testimony by Mary Brunner, 26, also a member of the Hippie cult, was false because she admittedly was in love with the cult leader Charles Manson, 35.

She had testified she was in the kitchen of Gary Himnan’s apartment when she heard a commotion, went into the living room and found Hinman wounded twice in the chest and Beausoleil with a knife.

Beausoleil, testifying in his own defense, accused Manson of the crime. He said Manson stabbed Hinman to death because the musician would not turn $20,000 over to him and join the cult.

Manson, already charged with the Tate-La Bianca killings, was indicted with two of his followers Tuesday for the Hinman slaying.

Before Salter gave his closing argument, Deputy District Attorney Burton Katz summed up his case by saying: “When you commit a crime in hell, you don’t have angels for witnesses.”

Katz noted that the major testimony against Beausoleil came from motorcycle gang leader Danny De Carlo.
