Charles Watson Wins New Extradition Delay

AUSTIN, Tex., Jul. 2 – Charles “Tex” Watson, the sixth defendant in the Tate-LaBianca murder case, has won at least another 30-day delay in being returned to California, the district attorney’s office reported yesterday.

Elvyn Holt, head of the district attorney’s Extradition Section, said she was informed that a federal district court in Texas denied Watson’s latest writ to block extradition.

But the court granted a 30-day stay to enable Watson’s attorneys. to appeal to the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Miss Holt said.

Watson 24, a member of the Charles Manson “family,” has been fighting extradition from Texas for seven months.

Prosecuting attorneys had hoped that he could be returned to Los Angeles in time to stand trial with cult leader Manson and the other defendants. But the latest court decision in Texas seemed to rule out any chance of that.

Jury selection was continuing yesterday in the trial, and the big question was whether defense attorneys would agree to accept the jurors now tentatively seated.
