LOS ANGELES, Nov. 11 – Two former Charles Manson clan associates charged with robbery and a stabbing attack on two men in Long Beach Sept. 25 were returned to city jail Tuesday after a preliminary hearing at which Nov. 24 was set as their Superior Court trial date. Bail is $62,500 for each.

Vernon Plumlee and Robert Russell, both 20 and AWOL from the Marine Corps, are held to answer seven felony counts including assault with intent to murder, burglary, robbery and grand theft.

The primary victim, Robert Rivarola, a 19-year old visitor from Peru, testified he was stabbed seven times by Russell on the night of the melee at an apartment at 3416 E. Second St.

Apartment owner Jeffrey Hanham, 48, was also stabbed but his injuries were not as severe.

The assaults occurred, according to testimony, after Rivarola and Hanham and a third man, Donald Noel Jackson, had cocktails with the pair.

When the defendants left, the trio went to dinner. Upon their return, Hanham and Rivarola found Plumlee and Russell ransacking the apartment and both victims were stabbed during a struggle which proceeded through all rooms of the dwelling.
