Susan to Testify of Being Tricked Into Confession

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 27 – Convicted murderess Susan Atkins, whose initial “confession” to the brutal Tate-LaBianca murders led to the arrest and eventual conviction of sex guru Charles Manson and three of his “family,” will take the witness stand during the penalty phase of the trial beginning Thursday to “pull everybody’s cover.”

The 22-year-old former choir singer, who gave birth to her first child while a member of Manson’s cult at the Spahn Ranch, wants to tell the jury, who will be deciding whether she should live or die for the killings, how her “confession” came about.

“Sadie wants to tell how she was tricked into making the confession, how she was illegally taken out of jail to her former attorney’s office, how the district attorney’s office joined in the game and how much money was promised and exchanged,” a source said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, chief defense counsel Paul Fitzgerald admitted that the girl would take the stand, along with Manson and a parade of “family” members.

The hippie leader, convicted with Miss Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten, has complained bitterly that he wanted to put on a defense after the attorneys rested their case without producing any witnesses.

Beginning Thursday, he will have his chance, Fitzgerald said Tuesday. Apparently ready and willing to testify also are the three girls that have kept constant vigil on the sidewalk outside the Los Angeles Hall of Justice for the past seven months — Brenda McCann, Sandra Good and Kitty Lutesinger — along with almost a dozen “family” members currently in jails
