Manson Jury Deliberating In 6th Day

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 28 — The jury in the second murder trial of condemned killer Charles Manson failed to reach a verdict yesterday after five days of deliberation.

The panel of eight men and four women was sequestered in a downtown hotel and is scheduled to resume deliberations this morning.

The jury has considered the case for 22 hours and yesterday asked to see 14 exhibits, most of which were introduced as evidence in the portion of the case which accuses Manson of the alleged murder of the movie stuntman Donald “Shorty” Shea. Shea’s body has never been found.

The 36-year-old cult leader also is charged with conspiracy to rob and murder musician Gary
Hinman, as well as Hinman’s slaying.

Hinman was killed in 1969 and the prosecution contends Shea’s murder occurred the same year.

It appears jurors may have already made decision on the Hinman charges and are now concentrating on Shea’s alleged murder.

Manson already is condemned to the gas chamber for the Tate-LaBianca slayings.

In a related case, Superior Court Judge James G. Koltz yesterday ordered the jury trying Steven Grogan for Shea’s murder sequestered because a verdict is expected soon in
Manson’s trial.

Judge Koltz granted a motion by Charles Weedman, Grogan’s attorney, that the panel be locked up in a downtown hotel until the end of trial.

Defense and prosecution attorneys are in the midst of closing Arguments in Grogan trial.

Weedman told the judge he was afraid the Grogan jury might be influenced by the verdict in the Manson case.
