California Court of Appeal Upholds Manson’s Convictions in 2 Killings

LOS ANGELES, Jun. 24 – Ruling it found no evidence of “prejudicial error,” the State Court of Appeal yesterday upheld Charles Manson’s 1971 convictions for the murders of Gary Hinman and Donald (Shorty) Shea.

The three-judge panel, in an unanimous opinion, said, “The totality of the evidence supports the jury’s verdict that Manson was guilty of the murders of both Hinman and Shea beyond a reasonable doubt and that neither was a close case.”

After a review of the court record and Manson’s arguments, the justices said, “We conclude there was no prejudicial error which requires reversal of the judgment. The judgment is affirmed.”

The 75-page opinion, issued this afternoon in Los Angeles, was signed by Charles A Loring, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge assigned to the appellate court. Concurring in the ruling were Appellate Court Justices Parker J. Wood and L. Thaxton Hanson.

The decision marked the second time in less than a year appellate courts have rejected Manson’s requests for new trials. Last August, the State Court of Appeal upheld Manson’s conviction in the Tate and LaBianca murders, a ruling which was affirmed in December when the California Supreme Court refused to grant Manson a hearing.
