Susan Atkins Delays Prison Wedding Plans

FRONTERA, Calif., Aug. 29 — Susan Atkins, the Manson family member serving a life term in prison for the Tate-LaBianca slayings, has postponed plans to marry a flamboyant Texas millionaire who vowed to gain her freedom.

Sylvia Johnson, superintendent at the California Institute for Women, said the wedding would not be held as scheduled Sunday in the prison’s Catholic chapel.

She said no new wedding date has been set, but refused to elaborate.

Atkins, 33, is one of several young women who joined a clan headed by Charles Manson in the late 1960s. Her fiance, Donald (Fla$h) Laisure, 52 — a businessman known around his home of Greenville, Tex., for carrying a big roll of cash — said he dated Atkins before she joined the Manson family and started writing to her after she began serving her sentence.

Laisure left his home on Thursday and was believed to be headed for Frontera, his landlord said.

The minister, John Kinkle, pastor of Christ Church in Los Angeles, said Laisure told him several days ago that the wedding was being put off.

“The only thing I know is it’s been changed,” Kinkle said Friday. “I think it’s postponed until Wednesday.”
