Newsom Will Not Appeal Van Houten Ruling

STATEMENT FROM ERIN MELLON, COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR FOR THE OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR

Jul. 7 – More than 50 years after the Manson cult committed these brutal offenses, the victims’ families still feel the impact, as do all Californians. Governor Newsom reversed Ms. Van Houten’s parole grant three times since taking office and defended against her challenges of those decisions in court.

The Governor is disappointed by the Court of Appeal’s decision to release Ms. Van Houten but will not pursue further action as efforts to further appeal are unlikely to succeed. The California Supreme Court accepts appeals in very few cases, and generally does not select cases based on this type of fact-specific determination

  1. Wolf's Stare says:

Yes, this should have happened years ago, she’s finally free, have a great rest of your life Leslie.

  2. CybeleMoon says:

a great geriatric life I guess and all the mounting crisis and problems besetting society today that she has been sheltered from all her life. Not easy for any of us today.

  3. Roger says:

Congratulations Leslie! I’ve been rooting for you!

  4. Old Michael says:

Anyone know if her parole will stipulate that she not write books or give interviews or in any other way profit or capitalize on her crimes?

    • Ray says:

What’s it to you? I hope if she’s asked to tell her story, she will be compensated. I’ll buy the book.
She’s served her sentence. Leave her be.

  5. Andrew says:

Very great news. To hold someone in incarceration for the actions of a 19-year old, and who has clearly addressed the issues of her crime, was just becoming politics – effectively making her a political prisoner. If it weren’t for the conflation with Manson she would have been released decades ago. And congratulations Rich for all your hard working on obtaining Leslie’s parole.

  6. Lee says:

    Truly sickening….

    • Ray says:

Too bad you’re not a supporter of the laws of the land.
She served her sentence 10x over.
      Leave her be.

You have a right wing seditious fascist cult to worry about.

      • Bob says:

Ray, maybe you can offer her a nice place to stay.

She is much older than the woman she stabbed. Both victims may have to a ripe old age if she would have helped them or try to stop the murders.

Talk about a sick cult. 🤷‍♂️

  7. Paul says:

    She was released this morning.

  8. Matt says:

No longer on the California inmate locator page. Sad for the families of the victims but I believe the law was followed.

    • Ray says:

Reasonable response. When you believe in and support the laws of our land, you believe that Leslie served her sentence and justice has been served.

  9. Ronald Harris says:

Good for her God bless her and I hope she has a good rest of her life… ❤️

  10. Paul says:

I’d say she served about 30 years more than most would have had there jab not been the Manson connection. She did her time.
