Woman Linked To 2 Slayings Is Not Iowan

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 11 – Los Angeles authorities say a woman indicted in two murders along with five persons charged in the Sharon Tate slayings apparently lied when she identified herself is being from Iowa.

Police said a Woman they identified as Leslie Louise Van Houten, 19, of Monrovia, Calif., told police when she was arrested as a material witness in Independence, Calif., that she was Leslie Sankston, 19, of Cedar Falls.

They said she also identified herself as Leslie Sankston of Cedar Falls when she was transferred to Los Angeles. Police said they were skeptical at the time.

Authorities Wednesday identified the woman as Leslie Van Houten at arraignment proceedings in Los Angeles on charges of murder in the slayings of Mr. and Mrs. Leno LaBianca the night after the Tate murders last August.

Miss Van Houten is charged in the LaBianca killings along with five persons who have also been charged in the Tate murders: Charles M. Manson, 35; Charles D. Watson, 24; Susan Atkins, 21 ; Linda Kasabian, 20, and Patricia Krenwinkel, 22.

Exhaustive checks earlier had failed to establish any connection to Cedar Falls of a Leslie Sankston.

    I believe Leslie was born or raised in either Cedar Falls or Cedar Rapids, IA. I was told that her grandmother resided in Cedar Falls.
