No Public Funds for Defendant

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 24 – No public funds will be used to pay attorney’s fees for Susan Denise Atkins, charged with the murders of actress Sharon Tate and seven others, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge said Friday.

Presiding Judge Joseph A. Wapner said the woman would be represented by Richard Caballero, a court-appointed attorney, but that Miss Atkins has retained him as private counsel.

Caballero was originally assigned to the case when Miss Atkins was indigent Judge Wapner said, but “there have been reports that part of a large amount assertedly paid her by news media for a story would go to her lawyer.”

Caballero said he would not request public attorney fees, Wapner said.
