Manson Loses Use Of Phone

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 13 – The telephone privilege of Charles Manson, who allegedly masterminded the slayings of actress Sharon Tate and six other persons, have been suspended by the sheriff’s department.

A spokesman for the department said Manson, who is defending himself, had been given full proper privileges, including the use of the county jail law library, mail privileges and telephone use.

However, he said the phone privilege was only to assist Manson in preparing his defense.

The spokesman said Manson abused the privilege by calling members of the news media and giving out statements.

“Therefore,” he said, “his privileges are to be suspended until they are reinstated by the court.”

He said the suspension affected only Manson’s telephone privilege.

A Los Angeles radio station disclosed today that it had interviewed Manson twice on Feb. 5 by telephone at the jail library and recorded a total of 30 minutes of conversation.
