Tate Suspect’s Extradition Could Come Next Week

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 13 – Police said yesterday they may be able to go to Alabama next week to pick up Patricia Krenwinkel, a former member of the Charles Manson family and a suspect in the Tate-LaBianca murders.

Miss Krenwinkel, 22, has been jailed at Mobile since last Dec. 1. The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals Wednesday upheld an order to extradite the attractive young woman to Los Angeles for trial.

Lt. Robert Helder, a police homicide detective, said he understood Miss Krenwinkel’s attorney at Mobile had stated in court he would seek a stay in execution on the order of extradition, and has five days in which to file the motion.

Assuming the jurist in charge of the case rejects the motion, Los Angeles officers then would depart for Mobile to pick up Miss Krenwinkel, Lt. Helder indicated.

Her attorney has delayed extradition by arguing the extradition papers had been improperly signed by Lt. Gov. Ed. Reineeke in the absence of Gov. Ronald Reagan.

The court ruled against the defense, but set a new date for the defendant’s return to California, where she faces sever charges of murder.
