Did Sharon Tate Have a Premonition?

HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 2 – It was just a creepy story, when Sharon Tate told it to me early in 1966. But now, three years and five murders later, it has acquired something more than creepiness.

She was a starlet then. Sensational to look at. They thought she was going to he a big star. Maybe she would have been. Maybe not. Anyhow, in ’66, she was a girl of promise.

But there was something a little strange about her. Everybody noticed it. They thought, at the time, that it was because her first feature was an oddball terror thing called “13” —later they changed the title to “Eve of the Devil” — and maybe she was taking her work home with her.

You could look at her for hours. And listen to the nutty stories coming out of that beautiful head. I like stories of the supernatural. She knew that, and she had one.

It involved Jay Sebring. And the house in Benedict Canyon.

No, not the house where she and Jay were killed. That was on Cielo, just off Benedict. But the houses can’t be much more than a mile apart.

Sharon used to date Jay. This was before she met Roman Polanski, the man she married. She and Jay went together for a long time. Jay had just bought the house in Benedict Canyon.

It had once been owned by Paul Bern. It was into that house that Bern had brought his bride, Jean Harlow. And it was in that house that Bern had committed suicide.

The beautiful girl told the story, calmly, matter-of-factly. It seems that Jay was in New York on business. And Sharon was between apartments. She called Jay and asked if she could stay in the house. Of course she could.

I saw a creepy little man, he looked like the pictures I’d seen of Bern.

– Sharon Tate

She was there that night. That dark night. She was alone. She wasn’t usually spooky, but for some reason she was that night, in that house. She kept a light on, by the side of her bed.

“I saw a creepy little man,” Sharon said. “He looked like the pictures I’d seen of Bern.” She ran downstairs.

When she got downstairs, she wished she was still upstairs.

“I saw a vision of someone tied to the staircase,” she said. “It might have been me. It might have been Jay. Whoever it was, it was cut open at the throat.”

She needed a drink, for nerve-steadying purposes. She didn’t know where the bar was. Something told her to open a bookcase. Inside, there was a hidden bar. She poured a shot.

There was some wallpaper below the hidden bar. For some reason, she picked at it, tore it away. It covered a lovely copper base to the bar. She wondered why it had been papered over.

Strange, how the mind works. Worrying about things like that when ghosts are wandering around upstairs and mutilated bodies are tied to the staircase downstairs. She thought it must have been a dream. She decided to find out and went back upstairs. The body — (Could it be her, could it be Jay?) — was still tied to the stairs. The creepy little man was still prowling around upstairs. She went to bed and somehow slept.

When Jay came back, the next morning, he woke her. She remembered the events of the night before. It must have been a dream — but…

“Hey,” he called, “who tore the wallpaper off by the bar down here?”

No dream.

But three years later, a mile up the road, a nightmare. She and Jay both killed. Both stabbed. Three others killed, too.

I have been to both places.
    It was not a dream.

    I have only been to one of them… 47 years ago… its gone now… just a memory… W.R.C.

  3. William R Cole. says:

No one wanted that girl… Sharon Tate… to die that was Tex Watson’s decision. Charlie didn’t like it he didn’t want that. he wanted what was right, but not that. Son of W.R.C.

well who knows who killed who. stories grow bigger as they roll toward the truth. so sad for all living and the dead. Sharon was a stunning woman. I hope all victims are at peace. if jay and Sharon are together then this is meant to be. sleeping when they want, no pain,no pressure,no anything just quite. I believe in death you are in between sleep and awake.

What exactly do you mean when you state, “Charlie didn’t like it, he didn’t want that.”
It is my understanding from much reading about Charles – the instructions he gave to Tex Watson that night were very clear – no one was to be left alive. Carrying out Charles Manson’s orders to the “t” everyone (with the exception of the guy in the caretakers house) was slaughtered.
I would also like to add the following – Tex Watson was not the only member of that group to wield a knife that night, both Susan Atkins and Patricia Kernwinkle were armed and showed no reluctance to attack the victims.
Charles Manson is as guilty as Tex Watson, Susan Atkins and Patricia Kernwinkle (and in many people’s opinions, Linda Kasabian). Charles may NOT have wanted Sharon Tate as an individual to die but when he sent his cohorts into that house he wanted a massacre. THAT alone should not be forgotten nor the blame shifted wholly onto anyone else’s shoulders.

You are absolutely correct, Tracy. I was a teenager in Oregon when these murders happened. The newspaper coverage was extensive and I followed it thoroughly. Manson ordered his followers to kill everyone in that house and told Atkins and Krenwinkle to do something “witchy”. He already knew that Terry Melcher no longer lived there but his anger over being denied a record deal transcended to all those he felt had more opportunity than he had. In his mind, this justified mass murder. “Helter Skelter”, in my opinion, may have been a belief taught to his followers but I don’t think he believed it. Manson was a hate-filled little man who felt he had been victimized and that this gave him the right to strike back at anyone more fortunate, anyone from the “establishment”. I do not believe in Hell but, if it exists, I truly hope he is there.

  7. Roxanne says:

After seeing the movie The haunting of Sharon Tate did anyone experience something dropping on the ground like a picture frame when someone passes by I just past it and nothing happened. I’m not near it and my boyfriend’s sister passed by and it fell gladly no glass broke.

  8. Nancy says:

Hillary Duff doesn’t even look like Sharon Tate

  9. Misty says:

Roxanne, it’s so strange you bring this up. I’m sitting here watching this movie and a glass owl planter that I keep pens in sits next to me on my night stand. It fell over. No good reason for that to have happened either. Now I’ve found myself in this little thread with you asking that question. Strange, indeed.

In reading Sharon’s dream and the Creepy Little Man, I have to say it was a premonition. I have kept a dream journal for three decades, and looking back at them many came true. Plus that house where Paul Bern killed himself would hold a continual vibe. I feel for the Tate family and this tragedy. In July of 1978 a dear female friend was brutally murdered by a bunch of drug heads. I saw her mother over the years and she never stopped grieving. Victims Families never heal completely.
