Hearing Set for Manson, Susan Atkins
Sunday, May 17th, 1970
LOS ANGELES, May 17 – A Superior Court judge today had scheduled May 27 to hear defense motions designed to free accused Tate-Labianca murder defendants Charles Manson and Susan Atkins.
Judge Charles H. Older will hear arguments on the motions at 9 a.m.
Atty. Daye Shinn, representing Miss Atkins, 21, will seek to suppress her confessions and admissions concerning the slayings last August of actress Sharon Tate and six others.
Manson, 35, represented by Ronald Hughes, has filed a petition for a writ of habeas corpus, claiming he is unlawfully detained in County Jail.
Miss Atkins, Manson and four others are accused in the murders. Their trial is scheduled for June 15 before Judge Older.
It was Miss Atkins’ testimony last December before a County Grand Jury that led to her indictment and those of her co-defendants.
However, she now claims she was pressured into giving that testimony.
In his petition, Manson contended Miss Atkins did not tell the truth before the Grand Jury and therefore, the indictment is invalid.
He also claimed he has been denied his right of due process under the law because another Superior Court judge refused to allow him to act as his own attorney.
Manson, Miss Atkins and Bruce Davis, 27, also are charged with conspiracy and murder in the July 27 death of musician Gary Hinman.
Authorities are still seeking Davis.
Motions to dismiss the Hinman indictment against Manson and Miss Atkins will be made May 22 before Superior Court Judge George M. Dell.
