Manson Family Legal Troubles

LOS ANGELES, May 20 – A motion by cult leader Charles Manson to substitute attorneys in one of the eight slayings he is accused of masterminding was denied Tuesday in Superior Court.
Manson asked Judge George M. Dell that attorneys Daye Shinn and I. A. Kanarek represent him in the Gary Hinman murder case instead of his present court appointed lawyer, Richard Walton.
“Of all the attorneys I have seen, Mr. Shinn treats me like a human being,” Manson said. “He does what I say.”
Dell refused the request and continued until June 4 all matters in the case.
Susan, Atkins, 21, and Bruce Davis, 27, both “Manson Family” members, also are charged in the July 27 stabbing-torture death of Hinman, a bagpipe musician. Davis still is sought by authorities.
Dell told Manson the substitution could result in a conflict of interest between the cult leader and Miss Atkins because Shinn is already representing her in the Hinman case. Shinn also is defending Miss Atkins in the seven Tate-LaBianca slayings.
