Susan Atkins Sues Her Lawyers, DA
Tuesday, January 11th, 1972
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 11 — Convicted killer Susan Atkins, 22, filed a $2 million damage suit today against her two former defense attorneys and Dep. Dist. Atty. Vincent Bugliosi, who successfully prosecuted her and other Manson family members for the Tate-LaBianca murders.
She claimed that early in December 1969, attorneys Paul Caruso and Richard Cabellero, without her knowledge, had taped a murder confession she made in their office but later repudiated.
She charged they not only permitted Bugliosi to hear the tape but arranged for him to interview her in their office where, she said, Bugliosi “rehearsed” what he instructed her to tell a grand jury which later indicted her.
She asked $1 million from Caruso and Cabellero and $1 million from Cabellero and Bugliosi.
